Magnesium for Fasting: Why It Matters More Than You Think
Sodium gets all the attention in fasting circles, and for good reason. It drops fast and the symptoms show up within hours. It does not crash in the same dramatic way, but most people are already starting their fast from a deficit, and fasting does not do anything to close that gap. If you have ever had a good fasting day turn into a bad night's sleep, or felt a calf cramp wake you up at 2am, magnesium is one of the first places I would look.

Most People Start Behind Before They Even Fast
This is the part that gets skipped in most conversations about fasting and minerals. Magnesium deficiency in the clinical sense is uncommon, but low intake relative to what your body actually needs is not. NIH data drawn from NHANES puts the number at roughly 48% of Americans consuming less magnesium than the estimated average requirement from food and beverages alone. Other analyses using serum thresholds put the number even higher.
That matters because fasting does not create a magnesium problem from scratch. It layers on top of one that is already there for close to half the population. You are not starting from a full tank and slowly draining it over your fasting window. A lot of people are starting already low, and the window just makes the shortfall more noticeable.
Why Fasting Makes the Shortfall More Noticeable
Magnesium does not deplete during a fast the way sodium does. Sodium loss is driven directly by the drop in insulin that happens early in a fasted window, and it shows up in hours. Magnesium's relationship to fasting is less about a sharp mechanical loss and more about demand going up while intake goes to zero.
A few things are happening at once during an extended fast. Cortisol tends to rise somewhat during fasting, and magnesium is one of the minerals your body draws on to manage stress response. Cellular energy production, which magnesium is directly involved in through its role in over 300 enzymatic reactions, does not pause because you are not eating. If you are training fasted, magnesium is being used for muscle contraction and recovery the entire time. None of it is coming in through food, because you are not eating any.
So it is less a leak and more a tap that stays closed while the demand on what is already in the tank keeps going. For someone who was already consuming below the estimated average requirement before they started fasting, that is a meaningful gap by the time they get several hours or a full day into a window.
Sleep Is Usually the First Place You Notice It
If I had to point to one symptom that shows up most consistently with low magnesium in people who fast, it is sleep quality. Magnesium supports GABA receptor function, which is part of what allows your nervous system to shift out of an alert state and into rest. Research on magnesium and potassium supplementation has found measurable effects on cortisol and melatonin levels alongside improvements in sleep duration and reported insomnia severity.
This connects back to fasting in a practical way. Poor sleep raises next-day cortisol, disrupts hunger hormones, and makes the discipline required to hold a fasting window noticeably harder. People who fast consistently and describe it as sustainable are very often sleeping well. People who describe fasting as a grind more often than not are not sleeping well, whether or not they have connected the two.

If your fasting days are fine but you are waking up at 2am and staring at the ceiling, or you fall asleep but wake up not feeling rested, magnesium is one of the more reasonable things to look at before assuming it is stress or screen time or something more complicated.
Muscle Cramps and the Nighttime Charley Horse
The other pattern I hear about constantly is nighttime leg cramps, especially in people who train fasted or who are newer to extended fasting windows. Magnesium works alongside potassium and calcium to regulate muscle contraction and relaxation. When any of the three is low, muscles are more prone to involuntary contraction, which is what a cramp actually is.
This is not purely a magnesium issue. Potassium and sodium are frequently part of it too, which is why addressing electrolytes as a group tends to work better than chasing one mineral in isolation. But if you are already covering sodium and potassium and still cramping at night, magnesium is the piece that is often still missing.
Does Magnesium Support Insulin Sensitivity During a Fast?
This is an area where I want to be careful not to overstate the case, because the research is genuinely mixed. Some trials have found that magnesium supplementation improves fasting glucose and insulin sensitivity markers, including in non-diabetic, overweight participants. Other well-designed studies have found no meaningful change in insulin resistance markers from magnesium supplementation alone.
The honest summary is that magnesium plays a real, well-documented role in glucose metabolism at the cellular level, but supplementing it as a fix for insulin resistance is not a settled finding. I would not fast specifically to chase an insulin sensitivity benefit from magnesium. I would take it because the sleep, cramping, and recovery benefits are better supported and because most people are already short on it regardless of whether they fast.
How Much Magnesium You Actually Need
The recommended dietary allowance sits around 400 to 420 milligrams per day for adult men and 310 to 320 milligrams per day for adult women, depending on age. That is total daily intake from food and supplements combined, not a fasting-specific number.
Magnesium does not need to be timed the way sodium does. Since it is not being flushed out rapidly the way sodium is, there is no urgency to front-load it at the start of your window the way I would recommend with sodium. Taking it consistently, once a day, matters more than exactly when you take it. Many people find taking it in the evening works well given its connection to sleep, though that is a preference rather than a requirement.
Not All Magnesium Is Equal
If you are choosing a magnesium supplement, the form matters more than most labels let on. Magnesium oxide, the cheapest and most common form on store shelves, is poorly absorbed, with fractional absorption estimated around 4 percent in bioavailability research. It is also more likely to cause a laxative effect at meaningful doses, which is the last thing you want during a fasted window.
Magnesium glycinate and magnesium citrate are both meaningfully better absorbed and are the two forms I would actually look for on a label. Glycinate tends to be gentler on digestion because of the glycine it is bound to, which also has its own mild calming properties that complement the sleep benefit.
Getting Magnesium From Food Without Breaking a Fast

Outside your fasting window, magnesium-dense foods are worth prioritizing regardless of supplementation. Leafy greens, pumpkin seeds, almonds, and dark chocolate are all solid sources. During your fasting window itself, a properly formulated electrolyte supplement with magnesium included, taken in water, will not break a calorie-focused fast and covers the gap without requiring you to eat.
