Potassium
Sodium and potassium work together to maintain electrical balance across cell membranes. When sodium is excreted, potassium tends to follow. Low potassium causes muscle weakness, cramping, irregular heartbeat, and fatigue. Under normal eating conditions you'd source it from bananas, avocados, and leafy greens. When fasting, you need to be more deliberate about it.
Practical range: 1,000 to 3,500mg per day. Note that very high supplemental potassium doses can be dangerous. Stay within reasonable amounts through a quality product and consult a doctor if you have kidney or heart conditions.
Magnesium
Magnesium is involved in over 300 enzymatic reactions in the body: energy production, muscle and nerve function, sleep regulation, and blood sugar control. It is already one of the most common deficiencies in the general population, and fasting makes it worse. Low magnesium while fasting shows up as muscle cramps (especially at night), poor sleep, anxiety, and difficulty concentrating.
Practical range: Many adults aim for roughly 300 to 400mg of total magnesium per day from food and supplements combined. For supplemental magnesium, start on the lower end and increase gradually. These symptoms are routinely dismissed as hunger or treated as an unavoidable part of fasting. Most aren't. They're signals that electrolytes need attention.

The best salt is the one you will use consistently. Sea salt, table salt, and Himalayan pink salt all provide sodium chloride and will address sodium depletion. The differences are minor in practice.
Himalayan pink salt is often marketed as containing trace minerals. It does, but not in amounts meaningful enough to replace the potassium or magnesium your body loses during a fast. Do not rely on pink salt as a complete electrolyte strategy. Use it for sodium, and address potassium and magnesium separately. Pink salt is fine. It's just not magic.
If your table salt is iodized, that is fine for fasting purposes. Iodine is a trace mineral your body needs regardless.

Avoiding Sodium Out of Fear
The low-sodium guidance that has dominated public health messaging applies primarily to people eating high-sodium processed food diets. When fasting, your kidneys are actively clearing sodium faster than normal. Avoiding it compounds the problem. For healthy people, the bigger issue during fasting is often too little sodium, not too much. If you have blood pressure, kidney, or heart concerns, follow medical guidance before increasing sodium intake.
Drinking More Plain Water Instead
Large amounts of plain water without electrolytes dilute the sodium concentration in your blood and can worsen the exact symptoms you are trying to fix. Hydration and electrolyte balance are connected but different problems. Address both.
Too Much Magnesium at Once
